Contemporary picture framing and specialist woodworking services for artists, galleries, corporate and private clients. We work closely with our clients, talking through possibilities and sharing ideas, developing designs to best display and conserve their art. Cape Picture Framing is a family run business, aiming to provide the best customer service.

We take care to maintain the same level of craftsmanship throughout, using materials best suited to the requirements of each individual job. Whether it's a single photo frame or a trade pack of custom sized window mounts, everything we produce gets the same attention to detail.
Services
Bare wood mouldings (left) are our best sellers.
Available in a range of sizes and types of wood.
Ash, beech, lime, tulipwood (poplar), and oak being the most common, maple and black walnut are also available.
A frame is made with bare (untreated) wood, to which a finish is applied before the mounts, glass, protective layers, and artwork are assembled within.
We also stock a small selection of traditional mouldings (right), with hundreds more available from our regular wholesalers.
We mill many of our own mouldings in-house, working to slender dimensions that exceed the boundaries imposed by standard ranges.
Choosing from a broad palette of waxes, stains, pastes and lacquers, and applying them in varying combinations either by hand or with a spray-gun, we can create a multitude of different effects.
Trying to choose an appropriate finish to bring out the best in an artwork can be tricky.
To make the choice a bit easier we keep dozens of samples in our workshop that can be viewed next to your art.
If what you are looking for is not among them, we can make up new samples just for you, to meet your specifications.
Mountboard is manufactured to three different grades: standard, conservation, & museum quality.
Inside our frames, we use only mountboard of conservation quality and above.
Conservation white-core will not only help to maintain the condition of the artwork, but will offer a superior level of presentation that will endure for many years after a standard grade mount will have gone brown with age.
We use either white-cores or solid-colour-cores inside our frames.
These conservation & museum grade mounts range in thickness from 1400 microns to 3400 microns.
We place a barrier layer behind the artwork and its mount to prevent any acidity that might be present in the environment from leaching into the art medium.
We then back our frames with a stiff board to protect against accidental impacts.
Finally the backing board is sealed to the frame with a long lasting, moisture resistant sealing tape.
For most frames, we find the traditional D-ring and picture cord to be the preferred choice of our clients.
When using specialist glass, the anti-reflective qualities are best experienced when the sight line is close to the perpendicular in both planes, relative to the glass.
This is a popular option for artists selling unframed prints.
Your print is presented in a window-mount, backed with the supporting board of your choice, and wrapped in cellophane.
You supply the prints and any labelling you want to have on the back.
We supply trade quantities of cut mountboard, window mounts (single mounts & double mounts), backing card, backing boards, & cut glass.
For mounts by mail order, use our custom sized mounts and backing boards price calculator.
