Somerset Stained Glass
Our bespoke leaded panels are hand made in the traditional fashion, using coloured glass pieces and lead. They are fully weather proof, for use as normal external glazing as well as interior decoration. They may be incorporated within double-glazed units. Repair and restoration work aims to fully respect the original work, the building & the client's needs.

We design and make stained glass panels to match or complement existing glasswork and from your ideas and traditional or contemporary designs. You will find lots of ideas and designs in this site that we can reproduce or modify for you. We can remove your old glass and install the new panels if required. Stained glass windows and leaded lights do not last for ever but they can usually be repaired or restored to their (almost) original condition.

Our repair and restoration work aims to fully respect the original work, the building & the client's needs, as well as any listing requirements. Exmoor client found this set in a cellar - decaying &broken - they were all rebuilt and fitted.
Services
All of the work shown in these galleries is our own production - they are bespoke new panels to clients' commissions, or existing panels that have been restored, usually by taking apart and rebuilding with new lead after the glass has been washed and new pieces cut to replace cracked or missing ones.
Much of it is fitted in South London, (where we still work occasionally) some installed behind panes of protective safety glass.
We moved to Somerset in 2017.

Leaded lights may be made with lead from 6 to 16mm width (one quarter to five eighths inch) with a rounded or flat profile - the flat usually having a small bead at the edges.
We can use regular 3 or 4mm float glass, which is very flat and 'perfect', but often use a variety of horticultural glass, around 3mm, which has a less perfect surface, and provides a more traditional look.
There are a variety of machine and handmade 'restoration' glasses available, with small bubbles (seeds) and an irregular surface and thickness.
You may be thinking about your stained glass window project as simply something new to keep the weather out, or perhaps as a bespoke art work, with particular relevance to you.
If you are thinking about a stained glass project, do get in touch, we will be happy to try and help.
We start by thinking about the design, and for that we need the approximate size and shape of the spaces in which the stained glass is to be fitted.
It's helpful if you have some firm idea about the design, and the colours, but if you are a bit vague on this, we can help - there are lots of examples in our galleries, and we can mix and match various elements of these together.
We work with lead cames (or calms) and coloured glass, cut by hand to the design or pattern (the cartoon), fitted together (leaded up), the lead joints fluxed (with tallow) and soldered together, cemented in (with a special putty - the cement) and finally polished.
Although we generate our designs using a computer programme, a medieval glazier would recognise much of what we do!
We do not use self adhesive lead strips combined with coloured films or lacquers to create our work.
These are non-traditional mass production type methods, often seen in double glazed windows and casements.
