The original orangeries of the 17th to 19th centuries were very grand, masonry structures with windows tall enough for the lower sash to be raised and used as a door.
High walls, topped with an ornate stone parapet served to conceal a glazed roof or lantern.
Orangeries were used for housing exotic plants during frosty winter months and in the summer they were popular venues for genteel tea parties or more extravagant entertaining.
The modern orangery is more likely to be used as an extended dining area than a romantic rendezvous among the indoor palms!

Light, bright and beautifully designed for all year round comfort (no more freezing in winter and boiling in summer!).
It could be said that whilst an orangery extends the house into the garden, a conservatory, with its fully glazed roof, brings the garden into the house.
Almost a derivative of the orangery, the conservatory enjoyed its heyday in the Victorian period with the use of cast iron or timber not only to create green house styled additions to grand properties but often to form intricate and elaborate frames for vast glazed edifices such as the Crystal Palace, built in 1851 but sadly destroyed by fire in 1934.

Contemporary living has moved the social hub of most homes from the drawing or living room to the kitchen.
This movement is reflected in the increasing demand for kitchen extensions to provide not only space for cooking but also for informal dining and socialising.
An orangery extension, be it traditional timber or contemporary aluminium, with its glazed lantern centred in the roof, adds not only the space, but also a stunning architectural feature to the house.

The process of getting your orangery or conservatory design and built usually starts with a telephone conversation in which you tell us what you are seeking to achieve.
We will talk about design and material options and we will also try to give you some indication of likely cost.
At the end of the conversation, if you wish, we will make an appointment for our designer to visit you at home to discuss the project in greater detail.
There is no cost for this consultation.
It sounds a bit of a clich but every conservatory and orangery really is unique; designs may be similar in style but each client's requirements and preferences are unique to them.

The majority of our conservatories and orangeries are constructed in timber (including a range of hardwoods, Siberian larch, oak or engineered timber).
We do our best to ensure we only use timber from certified renewable resources.
If your property already has wood framed windows, a timber conservatory or orangery is going to be the likeliest material to compliment and indeed enhance the existing architecture.
When timber isn't an essential pre-requisite we find more and more clients are leaning towards aluminium.
